User roles help you organize people into groups and assign permissions. These roles are most commonly used for controlling permissions, for automatic space assignment using User Space Assignment Rules , and for workflow approval steps. Top level roles allow you to give Control Panel access to users.

Note: Each space has its own roles, independent of top level roles, and system permissions are independent of space permissions. To give space permissions to users, you must set their space role in Manage Space. See Manage Space: Set User Space Roles .

Default Roles

Below are the default roles and their descriptions, for your reference.

Role Name Description
SiteAdministrator This is the global administrator role. This role can manage the entire platform by changing settings, permissions, and managing spaces. This role has the keys to the kingdom if you will.
Moderator By default, this role has practically the same permissions as the Site Administrator. The value in using this role is that you are able to remove permissions without having to affect Site Administrator permissions. So, if you want to give someone access to the full Control Panel, but not allow them to change system settings, you can remove those permissions from this role.
Member This role is what most users will have. This role is assigned to every user that registers on the platform. They cannot access the Control Panel, but they can create content and interact with other users.
Guest If you have your platform (or some of it) open to the public, these are your anonymous users. This role is not actually assigned to anyone, however, it does give read access to the parts of the platform that you open to the public.
