By default, Communifire comes with English resources. The Convert Resources page uses the Microsoft Translator API to convert the English resources to a specific culture or locale.
This process will take about a minute per 8000 resources to complete. When the process is complete, below the button you will see a count of the resources that we converted. That will be your indication that it is safe to leave that page. If you close or leave the window before the process is complete, don't panic – the system will pick up where it left off when you return.
If you want your new resource to be the default language for your community, set it as the default culture in Control Panel > System > General Settings > Localization Settings. Visitors to your site can choose which language they want as their default.
To tailor your translation, see Edit Localized Content: Replace or Change Static Text .
Note: If you previously converted resources to a certain language, converting resources to the same language again won't overwrite the resources.
User-created site text
In some areas of Communifire, user-created text is saved as localized content. These resources are also translated when you convert resources. Below is a non-exhaustive list of user-created text that is saved as localized content.

Want to work on all the translations in a spreadsheet? Let us know. If you have support, we'll provide you a spreadsheet to work from and import your translations for you when you're done. This can be useful if you plan on having a professional translation done.
Want us to get a professional translation for you? Ask us. Most languages are in the $2000-3000 range to translate.
You can display pages in RTL for right-to-left languages. Go to Control Panel > System > System Properties and set EnableRTLDetection to true.
Sometimes after completing a translation, a customer will make their translation available to the community. These languages are presently available:
Communifire version 5.2 and older uses the BING Translator API to convert the English resources to a specific culture or locale.
The Bing Translator has volume limitations
Communifire uses Bing Translation API to import all resources from one culture to another. In most cases, from the default English locale to your specified culture. Because of the API restrictions, you can convert only 2,000,000 characters/month. Once you have exhausted the API limit, we recommend you try to convert the pending "un-converted" resources after 24 hours.
This process may take a while to complete
Since the Bing API has certain limits (the token expires every ten minutes), the conversion runs pretty slow. The expected time to convert 5000 resources in Communifire is around 2-3 hours, so please wait patiently until the entire conversion process is complete.
Sometimes you might get this error below:
The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request.
This usually means that your token has expired. Just refresh the page and start the translation again. You may have to repeat this process multiple times to convert all the resources.
How do we set up this translation resource for individuals on our site? Is there a field we can add to their user profile that will help us ID which users need their platform view changed to a language other than English? Thank you! Anna Porter
Hi Anna,
Once you've translated resources, individuals must select their preferred language in the footer. There isn't a way to automatically select a language for users.
Grace
Also, can you confirm that de-DE (Deutsch) is the option to choose for 'German as spoken in Germany', please?
Thank you!
Fantastic - I'm going to move forward with this, then. Thanks for all your help - as always!!
We ran the "Convert Resources" task and successfully implemented translations to German, Spanish, and French, however, the translation only applied to the headers/headlines/etc of content - not the actual content of our articles, blogs, wikis, etc. How do we apply the translation to these other elements - is there a service that could see all our content translated? Thank you!
Convert Resources only translates static text. User-created content isn't translated. You may need to find a 3rd party service to translate user-created content.
Then to display the translated user-created content in Communifire, you'll need to either create new content or append the translation to the English version. There isn't a way to make translated user-created content display according to the language preference selected in the footer menu.
Do you have any recommendations/contacts for these 3rd party vendors that have previously worked with other customers within the Communifire platform?
Currently, we recommend using either the Google Translate language switch button or Weglot.
Our team would love to learn more about your organization's needs and use cases for translations to help guide our roadmap. Would you be able to have a call with us this week or next week to dive deeper?
Yes, let's schedule a meeting for Tuesday 2/2 midday (PST) or Weds am (PST), if available.
My manager, Brian Caldwell, Director, Marketing, Training, & Communications would like to join, too.
Thank you. One of my team members sent an invite to you and Brian Caldwell for next week.
