How do we set up this translation resource for individuals on our site? Is there a field we can add to their user profile that will help us ID which users need their platform view changed to a language other than English? Thank you! Anna Porter

Hi Anna,

Once you've translated resources, individuals must select their preferred language in the footer. There isn't a way to automatically select a language for users.

Thank you, Grace. We plan to translate our intranet into 3 languages, starting with German. I understand this will take some time to complete this task for each language. Before I get started on this, I have a few questions:
  • When we "Convert Resources" to another language - what exactly does "Resources" include. Does it mean all resources, as in all static content on every page/space on our intranet, or do we have to specify each page/space, etc.?
  • It's my understanding that when we convert resources to another language, everything will remain as-is, in English, and will only be visible in another language if a user selects that option. Is this correct?
    • Where is the button where they would select the option? The tutorial video says 'the footer' - is this footer on our main Homepage or their User Profile page (and does it populate automatically or is it a widget we have to add)?

Also, can you confirm that de-DE (Deutsch) is the option to choose for 'German as spoken in Germany', please?

Thank you!

Hi Anna,

  • Yes, static content in every page and space will be translated when you convert resources.
  • Yes, the site will continue to display in English. A user must change their language preference to see the site in the other languages.
  • The language preference menu automatically appears in the footer after you've converted resources. It appears to the right of the copyright and version text. The footer and language preference menu appear on every page.
  • de-DE is German as spoken in Germany. Here's a resource for language codes and countries: https://www.fincher.org/Utilities/CountryLanguageList.shtml

We ran the "Convert Resources" task and successfully implemented translations to German, Spanish, and French, however, the translation only applied to the headers/headlines/etc of content - not the actual content of our articles, blogs, wikis, etc. How do we apply the translation to these other elements - is there a service that could see all our content translated? Thank you!

Hi Anna,

Convert Resources only translates static text. User-created content isn't translated. You may need to find a 3rd party service to translate user-created content.

Then to display the translated user-created content in Communifire, you'll need to either create new content or append the translation to the English version. There isn't a way to make translated user-created content display according to the language preference selected in the footer menu.

Do you have any recommendations/contacts for these 3rd party vendors that have previously worked with other customers within the Communifire platform?

Hi Anna,

Currently, we recommend using either the Google Translate language switch button or Weglot.

Our team would love to learn more about your organization's needs and use cases for translations to help guide our roadmap. Would you be able to have a call with us this week or next week to dive deeper?

Yes, let's schedule a meeting for Tuesday 2/2 midday (PST)  or Weds am (PST), if available.

My manager, Brian Caldwell, Director, Marketing, Training, & Communications would like to join, too.
