How to Install Elasticsearch

Important Notes

  • Install only one Elasticsearch instance per server.
  • Do not install Elasticsearch on the same drive as your site files.
  • Ensure the drive has at least 50% free space.
  • If you have over 500 users, install Elasticsearch on a separate server.

How to Install

  1. Uninstall Previous Version
    • Remove any existing Elasticsearch installation to avoid conflicts (see instructions).
  2. Download Elasticsearch
    • Download the Elasticsearch installation file from the official Elastic website.
    • Extract the contents to a directory on your server (e.g., C:\Elasticsearch).
  3. Enable Security
    • Open the Elasticsearch\config\elasticsearch.yml file in a text editor.
    • Add the following line to enable security:
      xpack.security.enabled: true
    • By default, Elasticsearch is only accessible on localhost. To make the service run on a server IP, uncomment and update network.host: 192.168.0.1 to your desired IP address.
    • Save and close the file.
  4. Install Elasticsearch Service
    • Open Windows Command Prompt as an administrator.
    • Go to the bin folder in the Elasticsearch directory and run:
      elasticsearch-service.bat install
  5. Configure the Elasticsearch Service
    • Open the Services console: Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Locate the Elasticsearch service.
    • Right-click the service and select Properties.
    • Set Startup type to Automatic and click OK.
    • Right-click the service again and select Start.
  6. Set Elasticsearch Password
    • Wait a few minutes for the service to start.
    • In the Command Prompt, reset the password by running:
      elasticsearch-reset-password -u elastic
    Note: Record this password for the next step.
  7. Connect Elasticsearch to Axero
    • In Axero, go to Control Panel > System > System Properties.
    • Find ElasticsearchUsername, click Edit, enter elastic, and click Save.
    • Find ElasticsearchPassword, click Edit, enter the password from the previous step, and click Save.
    • If you set a server IP address in step 3, find ElasticsearchServer, click Edit, enter the IP address, and click Save.
  8. Finalize Installation
    • Go to System > Advanced System Utilities and click Restart Site. The restart may take a few minutes.
    • After the restart, click Rebuild Index. Once indexing is complete, you'll see the following success message:
    • If you are upgrading Elasticsearch, click Rebuild Activity Log Index.
