Navigation Widget

The Navigation widget is a flexible and powerful tool that builds menus on Page Builder pages and in the navigation header. You can add links to content homepages, specific content, personal tools, and more. With our built-in templates, you don't need any programming or design skills to start creating beautiful menus on your intranet.

Setting Description
Title The widget title appears at the top of the widget.
Alphabetical sorting Check to automatically alphabetize the navigation items.

Navigation Items

Property Description
Icon An icon for the navigation item.
Title The title of the navigation item.
Item type The navigation item type. See the table below for more details.

Item Types

Item Type Description
URL The page the navigation item links to. Paste a link to content to automatically populate a content item.
Group A group of navigation items. Drag other navigation items into the group. Set the following options:
  • Alphabetical sorting: Check to automatically alphabetize the items in the group.
  • Use logged in user's first name as widget title: Check to use the user's first name as the group header.

Note: The Group item type is only available when the template has a group template defined.
Content List A link to the content type page of a space. Set the following options:
  • Space: The space to link to.
  • Content type: The content in the space to link to.
Content Search for content.
Create A link to create a specific content type. Set the following options:
  • Space: The space to create content in. Select Not Specified to open the select space modal.
  • Content type: The content type to create.
Personal A personal page. Select the type (e.g., my Activity Stream, Bookmarks, Calendar, etc.).
Javascript JavaScript code to execute when the navigation item is clicked. Use this for custom actions like showing alerts, printing pages, opening URLs, or triggering custom functions. Examples: alert("Hello! This is a notification"), window.print(), or window.open("https://www.example.com", "_blank").

Field Description
Custom CSS class A CSS class to append to the navigation item.
Open in new tab Check to open the link in a new tab.
Show button text Check to display the navigation item title as the text.
Use logged in user's avatar as foreground image Check to use the user's avatar as the foreground image. Requires a template that uses {{Contents.ForegroundImageURL}}.
Use logged in user's first name as widget title Check to display the user's first name as the navigation item text.
Show pending count Check to show the number of pending items. Only available for the Personal type: Connections, Required Reading, and Workflow.
Foreground image Upload an image to use as the foreground image. Requires a template that uses {{Contents.ForegroundImageURL}}.
Background image Upload an image to use as the background image. Requires a template that uses {{Contents.BackgroundImageURL}}.

Managing Navigation Items

Note: When you add a link to content through the Navigation Widget (for example, linking to a Page Builder Page from the site homepage), permissions are automatically checked to ensure that the relevant person has access to the linked content or the associated space. If the individual does not have the required permission to access the content or space, the link will not be visible to them. This ensures that only authorized individuals can view and access the linked content, whether it's a Page Builder Page, an Article, or another piece of content.

Important: When a navigation item is created, you will not be able to change the Item type. You will have to delete the item you don't want and then create the one you want.

Templates

Navigation widget templates come with predefined child templates for each design. To enable template overrides, go to Control Panel > System > System Properties, search for EnableNavigationWidgetTemplateOverrides and set it to true.

Block Navigation List Template

The Block Navigation List template displays links in a vertical block design.

Default Unordered List Group Template

The Default Unordered List Group template displays groups in a Navigation widget using the Default Unordered List Template.

Default Unordered List Template

The Default Unordered List template displays links in a list.

Dropdown Menu Template

The Dropdown menu template displays links with icons.

Dropdown Section Template

The Dropdown Section template displays links with icons.

Dropdown Sub Menu Template

The Dropdown Sub Menu template displays a flyout menu of links with icons.

Launch Pad 1 Template

The Launch Pad 1 template displays links and images in a grid.

Nav - Banner Navigation Template

The Nav - Banner Navigation template displays links with images to the left.

Nav - Icon Blocks (2 Column) Template

The Nav - Icon Blocks (2 Column) template displays links and icons in a 2 column layout.

Nav - Icon Blocks (Pills) Template

The Nav - Icon Blocks (Pills) template displays links and icons in a vertical list.

Nav - Icon Blocks (Wide) Template

The Nav - Icon Blocks (Wide) template displays links and icons in a horizontal grid.

Nav - Image Blocks Template

The Nav - Image Blocks template displays links with images to the left.

Zeppelin Header - Icon Blocks Group Template

The Zeppelin Header - Icon Blocks Group template displays a link in the header that opens a dropdown menu.

The Zeppelin Header - Icon Blocks template displays header links as icons.

Field Description
Icon Select an icon to display with the widget. Requires a template that uses {{IconCSSClass}}.
Custom CSS class A CSS class to append to the widget.
Show Header Check to display the widget's header, including the title.
Show Footer Check to show the widget's footer.
Hide Container Border Check to hide the widget's border.
Use logged in user's first name as widget title Check to display the user's first name as the widget title. Show Header must be checked for this to show.
