On-Premises Upgrade Guide

Types of Releases

To ensure your site benefits from the latest developments, we offer two types of updates:

  • General Release: This is the latest and most stable Axero version, constantly refined to address any issues reported by our customers. It is the recommended update for self-hosted installations, ensuring your platform benefits from the latest developments without compromising performance. If your site needs to be upgraded to the latest General Release, please contact our support team by opening a support case.

  • Limited Release: Issued after the latest General Release, this version includes features that are still being tested. While Limited Releases offer an early look at the newest features of the Axero platform, they are best suited for cloud-based deployments where we can closely monitor performance.

Upgrade Process

1 Review System Requirements

  1. Ensure your system meets current requirements.
  2. Complete the Pre-Installation Checklist before proceeding.

2 Request the Update

  1. Open a support case to request the latest General Release version.
  2. Attach a screenshot of Control Panel > System > Axero Version, ensuring the full address bar is visible to confirm the version and site domain.

3 Back Up Data

  1. In IIS Manager, select Sites, right-click the site, and select Stop.
  2. In IIS Manager, select Application Pools, right-click the site, and select Stop.

  3. In Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, right-click the site's database, go to Tasks, and select Back Up.

  4. In File Explorer, back up the site files.

4 Stop Elasticsearch

  1. Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find the Elasticsearch service, right-click, and select Stop.

5 Prepare Update Files

  1. Download and unzip the update file from your support case.
  2. Delete the following unzipped items to avoid overwriting your site files: 
    Software\Assets\Uploaded-CMS-Files
Software\Assets\Uploaded-Files
Software\Assets\Uploaded-Photos
Software\Assets\Uploaded-Videos

Software\CFConnectionStrings.config
Software\WindowsADSettings.config
Note: If your web.config file has custom settings, transfer them to the new file.

6 Update Site Files

  1. In your site folder, delete all items in the Software\bin folder to maintain security.
  2. Copy the unzipped "Software" folder to your site folder. If not using a "Software" folder, copy the files to their respective locations.
  3. If prompted, select merge folders or "Replace the files in the destination."

7 Update Database

  1. In SQL Server Management Studio, right-click your database and select Properties. Click the Options tab and ensure that "Compatibility level" is set to "SQL Server 2016 (130)".
  2. Go to File > Open > File...
  3. Go to the unzipped "DB_Scripts" folder and open the database script recommended by Axero in your support case.
  4. If the following message appears, choose No.
  5. Select your database, click Execute, and ensure the query runs successfully.
Note: If you do not receive the message "Query executed successfully," right-click the Messages field and select Save Results As. Share the file in the support case for troubleshooting. Stop the upgrade and restore your site from backup.

8 Start Elasticsearch

  1. If your site was last updated before August 2024, follow this guide to update Elasticsearch.
  2. Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  3. Right-click the "Elasticsearch" service and select Start.

9 Start the Site

  1. In IIS Manager, select Application Pools, right-click the site, and select Start.
  2. In IIS Manager, select Sites, right-click the site, and select Start.

Congratulations! Your Axero site is now updated.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter errors loading your site, enable detailed error messages:

  1. Go to the web.config file in the website folder.
  2. Set CustomErrors mode to Off:
