A sub space is a sub community within a space. You can create sub spaces for smaller teams within your parent space, or create a sub space that is wholly dedicated to one particular task. A sub space can be public or private. For example, the space Human Resources could have a public sub space called Recruiting and a private sub space called Training.

Users who are invited to the sub space can join a sub space. Users can also request to join a sub space. If a sub space is private but has unmoderated membership in Manage Space: Settings, then anyone can join the space.
If a user joins a sub space and they are not a member of the parent space, they are automatically added to the parent space, regardless of the parent space's visibility. To disable this, go to Control Panel > System > System Properties and set AutoJoinParentSpaces to false.
If a user is a member of a sub space and they leave the parent space, they remain a member of the sub space, regardless of the sub space's visibility.

Content permissions determine whether the content in a public sub space will appear in search results or remain restricted. To restrict access, uncheck the Guest View permission in Content Permissions for each entity type.
Content is automatically hidden from search and is only accessible to members of the sub space, regardless of Guest role permissions.
You can include both content and users from sub spaces in a parent space’s search results by setting the IncludeSubSpacesInSpaceSearchResults system property to true. This will display sub space content in the parent space's search results and include sub space members in the People directory. When set to false, only content and users from the parent space are included. Enabling this may increase the time required for searches, especially in larger communities with extensive subspaces.
Note: This property affects only space-level searches. It does not apply to global search. In global search, results from all spaces the user has permission to view will appear, regardless of space hierarchy or system property settings.
Private to publicWhen you change a sub space from a private space to a public space, the View permission for the Guest role is enabled for the following content types:
You can manually configure Guest permissions for Content Types in Content Permissions.
Public to privateWhen you change a sub space from a public space to a private space, all Guest permissions for all content types are also cleared automatically when you convert the space. You can manually configure Guest permissions for each Content Types in Content Permissions.
