A public space is listed and searchable by everyone in the community. Non-members can find and view a public space and its content.
How far "public" reaches depends on one site setting. Under Control Panel > System > General Settings, the option to allow access only to registered members decides whether people who are not signed in can reach anything at all:
What "Guest" means here. In a space, the Guest role covers everyone who is not a member of that space: visitors who are not signed in, and signed-in people who have not joined. It is not a role you assign to a person. So the Guest permissions decide what non-members can see, whether or not they are signed in. If the site requires everyone to sign in, the Guest permissions still apply to signed-in people who are not members.

A public space can be found in Browse Spaces and in Search.
Anyone can join a public space, either by invitation or by clicking Join. If space membership is moderated, an administrator or moderator of the space must approve each request to join.

To hide certain content from non-members, uncheck the Guest View permission for each Content Types in Manage Space: Space Permissions.
Non-member view of a public space when Guest View permissions for Articles, Blogs, Cases, Events, Files, all Forums, Ideas, Photos, Videos, and Wikis are unchecked
When you uncheck the Guest View permission for a content type, non-members can no longer open or search for items of that type.
When you convert a public space to a private space, the space no longer appears in Browse Spaces or in Search. Converting also clears all Guest permissions for all content types automatically. You can then configure Guest permissions by hand for each Content Types in Manage Space: Space Permissions.
