When you subscribe to a discussion, you will get notifications and email notifications when new replies are posted to the discussion.
Click the forum and discussion.
Unsubscribing happens on the discussion page, so it needs View permission on Discussions in the space that owns it.
This is the failure people report as being unable to stop the emails. Someone who is not a member of that space falls to the Guest role there, and if Guests do not have View on Discussions, the unsubscribe link returns a permissions error while the notifications keep arriving.
The fix is to grant View under Manage Space > Permissions > Discussions in that space. Changing the community-level Discussion Permissions does not help here: that page sets the defaults applied to new forums, it does not change an existing one. The alternative route below, through My Content, also works and does not depend on that permission.
