Journeys move through several lifecycle stages, starting in Draft and progressing through Active, Paused, and optionally Archived or Stopped. Each status affects how the journey behaves and what actions admins can take at each stage. Understanding these states helps manage enrollment, content updates, and communication timing.
Every journey begins in the Draft state. It can be built and reviewed but is not yet available to participants. No steps are triggered, and no users can be enrolled.
While in Draft, admins can:
Once activated, a journey becomes live. Users can be enrolled and will start progressing through the defined steps. Messages and automations are delivered as configured.
While Active, admins can:
Pausing a journey suspends all activity. Users remain enrolled but cannot advance, and no communication is sent.
While Paused, admins can:
When a journey is archived, it no longer accepts new participants. Existing users remain at their current step, and no further messages or automations are sent.
While Archived, admins can:
Stopping a journey removes all participants and returns the journey to Draft. It is used when the journey needs to be reset or discontinued.
After stopping, the journey reverts to the Draft state, with all corresponding actions available:
