# REST API: Get Child Spaces

GET/api/spaces/child

List the child spaces one level below a space. A site administrator can narrow them to one user's spaces with UserID; anyone else gets only the child spaces they belong to.

### Required Parameters

| `ParentSpaceID` | Integer | YES | Query | ID of the parent space whose child spaces are returned. 0 returns the top-level spaces. |
| `UserID` | Integer | YES | Query | ID of the user whose child spaces are returned. Send an empty value for no user filter; the parameter itself must be present. Only a site administrator's value is used: for anyone else, the caller's own ID replaces it. A value that is not a number counts as empty, and a comma-separated list answers 500. |
| `FromCache` | Boolean | YES | Query | Required by the route but has no effect: the results always come from the database. Send true or false; any other value answers 400. |

## Error Handling

| Status Code | Likely Cause | Next Action |

| 400 Bad Request | ParentSpaceID or FromCache is missing or not valid, or UserID is left out of the query string. | Check the request against the required parameters. |

| 403 Forbidden | The caller is not a site administrator and cannot view the parent space or one of the spaces above it. | Confirm the user has the required roles for this action. |
| 500 Server Error | UserID is a comma-separated list, or another internal failure. | Retry later. |

## Rate Limits

While Axero does not enforce hard rate limits by default, we recommend the following best practices to ensure optimal performance:

- **Sustained Request Rate:** Do not exceed 5 API calls per second
- **Sequential Processing:** Wait for each request to complete before sending the next in automated workflows
- **Concurrent Connections:** If parallel processing is required, limit to 3 or fewer simultaneous requests
- **Response Timeout:** Ensure API responses complete within 15 seconds during testing

Axero may implement temporary rate restrictions if excessive API usage affects overall site performance. For high-volume integrations, contact Axero to discuss your requirements.
